Autism Speaks

Dear Mom and Dad

Thank you for helping me
get through school. I really appreciate
all that you did. You know
I was really scared at
the begening of elementary
school. But thanks to you
both I would not be
where I am today. Thanks
for helping me with
my homework and school
projects. I can't thank you
two for all that you
have done for me. And
I will love you always.

Ahhh! Isn't it sick making how one [huge] gesture can make everything alright again? [I hope you didn't cry?]

thanks to all of you who enjoyed this.

It is a little deceptive...At the time Ben was going to school for 6 hours a day, and working (fighting with parents) for about 4 hours a day on homework. He called school "torture". I had TREMENDOUS (well founded) guilt because of the decision I had made that, handicapped or not, he would do his homework every night. Looking back, it was a form of child abuse in my mind and I would never do it again...10 hours of school a day WAS torture.

So few people know what our kids go through to "fit in" a stupid program that seldom considers to take their wiring into account.

So these days, when teachers complain about Ben...we talk about his similarity to us (nerds, profoundly unorganized, etc., etc.) and shrug our shoulders, tell 'em about the old days, and BLOW IT OFF!!!

God love you all, and please learn from our mistakes. This letter from Ben only attests to the resiliency of his spirit, which bodes well for his future.
